WORKSHOP:

Introduction to analog portrait photography

Saturday 08.03.2025 | 11:00 - 19:00 h

Fotofabrique | Valentinskamp 34, 20355 Hamburg

Very few amateur photographers have the extensive resources of a professional studio at their disposal. However, these are not absolutely necessary for a good, interesting portrait. A variety of interesting portraits can be realized with simple and limited means. These limitations offer the opportunity to improvise, think outside the box and get creative. The workshop will provide background, food for thought and practical applications that will offer participants simple tools to make limitation a tool for creative realization in their own future portraits.

The focus here is on indoor/studio portraits in black and white, as this is the best way to illustrate the principles. However, the basics of lighting and staging will be equally applicable to outdoor/color portraits.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of photography (aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc.) is a prerequisite. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced photographers.

You can bring a manual camera of your choice, whether 35mm or medium format. SLR cameras are an advantage, but you can also work with rangefinders and TLR cameras or similar. Fully automatic point & shoots are not recommended. It is also possible to borrow a camera from us (please ask in advance by email or phone, then we can provide something).

Workshop content:

Theory and history
The history of photography has produced many artists who have shaped different approaches to the photographic portrait. From the pioneers of Pictorialism to modern documentary photographers. The first part of the workshop will provide an overview, show examples and give inspiration.

Demonstration and brainstorming
In the second part, some practices will be shown using hands-on examples. Starting with the basics of lighting portraits, to simple tools to break the classic representation, to the use of different camera and lighting techniques. Ideas for the third part can be developed together.

Implementation
In the final part of the workshop, participants will apply everything they have learned so far themselves. Everyone has the freedom to develop, can use the tools available on site and receive support in implementing their own ideas. A model will also be on site to help realize the concepts.

The results on film will then be developed by our laboratory. This allows participants to see their results as quickly as possible.
(One roll of black & white film incl. development & scan size M included in the price)
