YOUR LAB, WHEREVER YOU ARE

Specialist photo lab in Hamburg - developing, scanning & printing in two locations

Send us your films

We are a specialist photo lab in Hamburg with two locations where we develop, scan and print. Your pictures are our greatest concern. We try to get the best out of every film and scan for you.

Color negative

Color negatives are the most common films and are developed in a standard process called C-41.
Well known FIlms are for example Kodak Gold, Kodak Portra or Fuji 200.

Color positive

Farbdias sind besonders hochwertige Filme, die als Positive entwickelt werden. We develop them using the E-6 process.
The most common films are Kodak Ektachrome or Fuji Provia.

Black & white negative

With black and white films, there is the greatest variety of films and development methods. Depending on the film, we develop with the Ilford RT Rapid process or D76 and HC110 developer.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE ONLINE LABORATORY

Lots of experience + modern processes = top quality

High-end film processing

By joining forces with the renowned traditional profile laboratory Open Eyes in Hamburg Eppendorf, we combine 20 years of experience with modern work processes. This perfect blend enables us to offer a new, young, analog community the highest quality at fair prices.

C-41 development (color negative films) - precision and quality

For C-41 color negative development, we use advanced machines such as the Colenta/Tecnolab hanger machine and Fuji continuous feed machines. The hanger machine works in complete darkness, dipping the films into the chemical baths one by one, with the entire process monitored by an infrared camera. This machine can develop films up to a size of 8x10". The continuous feed machines, on the other hand, are more compact and allow development up to medium format while being used in a bright room.
Both C-41 processes are perfectly coordinated with each other, so that we deliver consistently high-quality results - without any qualitative differences between the machines.

E-6 development - high-quality processing for all formats

Our E-6 development is carried out exclusively with the Hostert hanger machine, which also processes films up to 8x10". With this modern technology, we are one of the last laboratories in Europe that can develop E-6 films of such high quality in all formats.

Black and white development - the latest technology for maximum precision

For the development of black and white films, we use the Colenta continuous processing machine in the innovative Ilford RT Rapid process. This new technology was developed in 2023 in close cooperation with Ilford and enables one of the highest quality standards in black and white development in Europe. As the first lab in the world to implement this technology, we now offer particularly consistent and precise development.

For special black and white films or larger formats up to 4x5", we use classic development processes with D76 and HC110 chemicals in our Jobo Autolabs.

Highest quality through precision and experience

The quality of the negative is our top priority. Through daily test films, regular quality analyses and continuous maintenance, we minimize sources of error and guarantee consistently excellent results. For us, reliable development always comes before fast development - we normally achieve both.

Fuji, Noritsu, Hasselblad & Phase One

Digitization at the highest level

The digitization of negatives is now standard in every laboratory. Our modern laboratory scanners, some of which date back to the last generation of the early 2000s, still offer exceptional speed and breathtaking image quality. The so-called "color science" of these machines achieves almost magical results. For the highest quality in our Standard and Student:innen packages, we only use the Noritsu HS1800/S4 scanner, which achieves absolute top values in resolution and sharpness.

Fuji Frontier for precise color reproduction

For our Pro packages, we also offer the option of selecting the Fuji Frontier scanner, which is particularly popular with professionals due to its more neutral color reproduction. For all scan jobs, you also have the option of low-contrast scanning. This results in flatter images that lose less detail, especially with high-contrast subjects, and gives you more control in post-processing.

Scan sizes for different film formats:

35mm films (35mm):
The scan sizes refer to full-frame shots on 35mm film. For panorama formats such as XPAN or Fuji XT1, the pixels of the long sides and the file size are doubled. For half-frame images, the values are halved accordingly.

  • Scan S: approx. 1000x1500px, approx. 1.5MB (JPG) / 5MB (TIF)
  • Scan M: approx. 2000x3000px, approx. 6MB (JPG) / 18MB (TIF)
  • Scan XL: approx. 4500x6800px, approx. 28MB (JPG) / 90MB (TIF)

120 films (medium format):
As medium format films have different camera formats with different aspect ratios, the actual size of the scans varies. Panorama formats such as 6x12 or 6x19 are not supported as they cannot be processed with our lab scanners.

  • Scan S (6x4.5): approx. 2940x2400px, approx. 6MB (JPG) / 20MB (TIF)
  • Scan S (6x6): approx. 2400x2400px, approx. 5MB (JPG) / 16MB (TIF)
  • Scan S (6x7): approx. 2400x2800px, approx. 5.5MB (JPG) / 19MB (TIF)
  • Scan S (6x9): approx. 1960x2940px, approx. 5MB (JPG) / 16MB (TIF)
  • Scan L (6x4.5): approx. 5900x4800px, approx. 23MB (JPG) / 80MB (TIF)
  • Scan L (6x6): approx. 4800x4800px, approx. 19MB (JPG) / 66MB (TIF)
  • Scan L (6x7): approx. 5600x4800px, approx. 22MB (JPG) / 77MB (TIF)
  • Scan L (6x9): approx. 5900x3900px, approx. 20MB (JPG) / 66MB (TIF)

The file sizes in MB are for comparison purposes only. Images with the same resolution can have different file sizes, as these also depend on the number of colors in the motif. Black and white motifs, for example, have smaller MB sizes without being of poorer quality.

High-end scans with Hasselblad and PhaseOne backs - Fine Art department

For particularly demanding scans, we also offer high-end scans with Hasselblad and PhaseOne backs.
You can find more information about high-end scans in our new Fine Art section.

RA-4 prints for eternity

Real analog prints

In most labs and drugstores today, you can get digital prints that have little to do with the classic photo prints that used to be glued into photo albums or given as gifts. We are proud to be one of the last labs in Hamburg that still works with a real RA-4 printer. Although the images are digitized beforehand, the printing is done with an ultra-high-resolution laser that exposes the photos - almost like in the darkroom - on real PE photo paper. The prints are then chemically developed in a continuous feed machine, which gives them a superior quality. In this way, we offer the best machine-produced prints at an unbeatable price-performance ratio.

Photo prints in various sizes - From 10x15cm to 30x90cm

In our standard packages, we offer prints in 10x15cm for the entire film. However, you can also order any type of image file (from approx. 2MB file size) directly to us and have them printed in various sizes, including

  • 9x13cm
  • 10x15cm
  • 13x18cm
  • 15x21cm
  • 18x24cm
  • 21x30cm
  • 24x30cm
  • 25x38cm
  • 30x45cm
  • 30x60cm
  • 30x90cm

We are are working on it, to offer this service online soon so that you can benefit even more conveniently from our high-quality photo prints.

Fine Art Print Service - Highest print quality with pigment printers

We also offer a comprehensive Fine Art Print Service with high-resolution, modern pigment printers. Our fine art prints are ideal for high-quality photographic art and offer exceptional color brilliance and detail. More information in the new Fine Art section.

The analog original

Your negatives in good hands

At Khrome, we value the authenticity and physicality of analog photography. Even though we digitize images and share them online, the original - the negative - remains the heart of every photo for us. We treat your negatives with the utmost care to avoid dust, scratches and creases. Our aim is to protect your negatives as much as possible in special order bags so that you can bring them home safe and sound.

Storing your negatives

When we opened Khrome three years ago, we never thought we would ever have to destroy negatives. But unfortunately, more and more orders were not picked up, so we had to introduce a storage limit:

  • Standard and Student:innen packages: 6 weeks storage. You will receive a notification when your negatives are ready for collection. We will remind you again after 4 weeks.
  • Pro packages: 6 months storage. This gives you enough time to collect your negatives.

If you don't manage to collect your negatives in time, simply send us an email to lab@khrome.de with a new collection date and we'll keep them for you for longer.

Data protection-compliant disposal of negatives - securely and responsibly

If it does become necessary to destroy negatives, we ensure that they are disposed of securely and in compliance with data protection regulations. Our use of the shredder service guarantees that your negatives are not simply thrown away, but are properly destroyed.

Why keep negatives? - The importance of the original

Although we don't condemn anyone who doesn't collect their negatives, we would recommend that everyone keeps them. Your negatives are the original, the real thing - they will outlast any hard drive and can be digitized again and again or even printed in analogue. Even if it seems unnecessary now, you'll be glad to still have your old negatives later and be able to work with them again.
